I've recently seen so many litter box recommendations, it's a bit overwhelming. As a seasoned cat owner with many years of experience, I'd like to share my experience.
Litter Box Size is Crucial
First and foremost, the size of the litter box is really important. My cat was only the size of my palm when he was a kitten, but after three months, I suddenly realized how fast he grew! So, when buying a litter box, always choose a larger one; don't think a smaller one doesn't matter. At least choose a 50x40 cm size. Many on the market are 50x35 cm, which may seem like a 5 cm difference, but those 5 cm are actually very important for cats; it makes turning around much easier.
Enclosed Litter Boxes are the Best Choice
Many people struggle with the style. I personally strongly recommend enclosed litter boxes! Especially for cat owners with limited space, enclosed litter boxes effectively mask odors. Open-style litter boxes are suitable for homes with ample space where odors don't spread, or if your cat weighs over 15 pounds (in which case you could consider making a closed one yourself).
Long-channel litter boxes are the most practical. I've used many types of litter boxes, and I've found that long-channel ones are the best. The space without litter is large, and in special circumstances (like diarrhea), the channel can be removed, turning it into a super-large litter box. Regular flip-top litter boxes are also acceptable, but try to choose one with a connecting mechanism, as carrying the lid every day is really tiring. I haven't bought bottom-in, top-out litter boxes, and I don't recommend them; they don't mask odors well, and they're too complicated, plus the cat won't know how to use them.
Automatic litter boxes? I haven't used them, so I can't comment. Ultimately, everyone's needs and circumstances are different, so you can choose according to your own situation.
